As diversity increased, we embraced a lifestyle where we feel happy as consumers and needy. As the definition of needs changed, so did the definition of happiness. So, is this happiness real? It’s not an easy question to answer…

What can we do in our individual lives against the climate crisis, which is growing like a snowball? In my opinion, a lot… Even though the impact of governments and industry is more significant, there are things we can do, like the starfish story. Above all, our most valuable power is purchasing power. By directing this power in the right direction, we can even put an end to the negative effects of climate change.

What can be done?

Stand Against Deforestation!

Over 17% of human-induced greenhouse gas emissions come from changes in land use, especially deforestation. Many raw materials and end products are derived from trees. For example, wood used as fuel, furniture materials, paper made from the cellulose of trees, and fibers used in yarn production are just a few examples. Considering the growth times of trees, is it possible for them to keep up with our rate of consumption?

Don’t Buy Because It’s Cheap!

If a product is cheap, it means that an unsustainable method was preferred, either in its raw material or labor, to cut costs. You wouldn’t want to own a product that is both a theft of labor and harmful to the environment, would you?

Opt for Renewable Energy Sources!

This is a serious issue in our country. Our electricity production is largely dependent on imported natural gas. Despite serious incentives from the state for renewable energy investments, our transformation rate is unfortunately slow. Many people cannot choose electric vehicles even if they want to because there are deficiencies in our infrastructure. Nevertheless, we must accelerate this transformation by demanding it. The entry of diesel vehicles into many city centers in Europe has been banned. It is clear that such practices will make a difference in our choices in the not-so-distant future.

Promote Recycling!

Of course, the priority should be to prefer options that create zero waste. Choosing products without packaging, turning away from single-use plastics is essential. If we still generate waste, directing it to recycling is a valuable effort. This reduces environmental pollution and saves energy.

Conserve Water Usage!

Less than 1% of the existing water on the Earth’s surface consists of freshwater sources suitable for ecosystems and human use. Currently, 1.4 billion people lack access to clean water sources. Due to factors such as rapid population growth, changing precipitation patterns due to climate change, and global warming, freshwater sources are decreasing every year. It is estimated that by 2030, the world’s water demand will increase by about 50%. Turkey is categorized as a country that may experience water scarcity in the future. Let’s not console ourselves just because we are surrounded by water on three sides. Our water is a valuable resource, and it is necessary to pay attention to its conscious consumption and not polluting it today so that future generations do not suffer.

As Muhammad Iqbal said, “Unity in action is necessary; unity in thought is useless.” Are you ready to act together for a sustainable future?

Sources: wwf.org.tr, herkesbilimteknoloji.com

Act Now for Climate Change!
